Forklift certification training process

Home / Forklift certification training process

A forklift or a lift truck is an industrial truck powered and primarily used to lift heavy goods over a short distance. The short distance can be on to the next story of a building certification for forklifts

Companies and service members depend on the forklifts to carry or lift heavy loads from one ground to the next, around a warehouse, construction site, on to transporting trucks and storage facilities. The driver and other workers’ safety are paramount since they carry large loads, which may cause a fatal accident. For one to drive a forklift, one has to be licensed and certified. All these are done after training. Relevant authorities must approve one.

Training of these operators is a solution to preventing accidents and minor mishaps like injuries and bruises. Even severe damages and accidents like overturning trucks can be curbed by training and certifying the operator. Certification comes with benefits which include:

– More productivity

– Safe working environment

– Enhanced employee morale

– Less risk of being injured

– Job promotions

Forklift certification includes truck inspection, basic repair, and maintenance, which aids in extending truck lifetime curbing forklift malfunction.

One can be certified as an operator by training either in vocational training schools or a company. Some people may choose either in-person class training or an online one, but most people prefer in-person to online due to in-depth practical learning. The training comprises classroom learning, a written assessment, evaluation, and practical fieldwork training.

Steps followed during the forklift certification process.

Choosing the forklift that you need certification on

One must choose the forklift truck depending on one’s interest. Some of the forklift types are counterbalancing, sit down and stand up, among others. Determining this is done before starting training.

Enroll in the course

One must find an approved training institution or body in his locality. The training facility must be registered with the relevant licensing body, reducing the chances of one training with a fake facility that aims to make money but not offer valid certificates.

Take classes

Going to class is the first step. Usually first part talks about safety, rules, truck maintenance, driving skills, among others. The average class hours are seven to eight, which include videos, lectures, and written materials.

Passing the examination

A written assessment is undertaken after completing the classwork. The trainee is required to score well over the pass mark to continue with training.

Completing practical field training

Completing practical training is done after passing the exams. One is supposed to demonstrate skills learned on the forklift. The trainer must show trainees how to work with the forklift, after which they will do more practice. The skills learned may include loading and lifting items, inspection, working on tight spaces, and more. The trainee will be ranked as per the skills demonstrated on the truck.

Final evaluation

Forklift trainer will evaluate the trainee’s general performance. If driving skills and exam score are both satisfactory, then one becomes certified.

After being certified, a forklift operating license is awarded. The certificate contains the operator name, trainer, and assessment date.

Online courses consist of only classroom teaching and examination. One will be required to find a good instructor who can provide practical hand skills and evaluation before certification.
